High pressure pumps are common in industrial or commercial applications where pressures exceeding normal use (30-60 psi) are needed. The high pressure is achieved in centrifugal pumps by multiplying the amount of impellers used to move the liquid. More impellers increase the pressure, although it does not increase the amount of liquid pumped. Another kind of pump used to develop high pressure is with positive displacement pumps. In a sense, centrifugal pumps "throw" liquid, while positive displacement pumps "push." Positive displacement pumps accomplish high pressure with the use of plungers or pistons.
